This course employs theory & research findings to understand & assess functioning of individuals & families in their social environment. It emphasizes a biopsychosocial approach for analyzing the impact of various social forces on individual & family dynamics.

SW 2700 Social Determinants of Health [3]

This course introduces the core concepts of social determinants of health & how they influence the health of individuals, communities, & populations. This course will provide an overview of the dynamic relationships between social, economic, & structural conditions under which people live that determine their health. We will explore how social influences such as living conditions, education, income, infrastructure, healthcare, social capital, stress, gender, & race affect health & longevity & perpetuate health inequities.

This course is designed to familiarize case managers with the DSM-V & mental illness within the context of society, to understand the etiologies, to recognize symptoms, & to realize the impact of these behaviors upon the individual, the family, & the community.

SW 3400 Developmental Impacts of Child Abuse & Neglect [3]

This course involves an intensive study of child abuse & the developmental aspects included in evaluating abused children & their families. An overview of the brief history of child abuse in the United States is examined as well as the implications of major policy in the relation to child welfare. The course will also examine the causation, typologies of abusers, characteristics of abused children & adults, assessment & diagnostic skills, crisis intervention & effective treatment approaches.

This course explores the many different definitions of diversity & the different realities & impact of how diversity functions in the United States. Ways in which practitioners seek to deal with the abuses experienced by individuals & families & to ensure that all individuals have an equal opportunity to develop & prosper free of discrimination, oppression, privilege, victimization, & exploitation are discussed.

SW 3710 Case Management for Social Workers [3]

This course introduces students to the concept of case management & how it is used to provide human services. Students will explore the many factors affecting case management today including federal legislation, emerging client groups, technology, shifting demographics, paperwork, evidence-based service delivery models, & the resulting ethical & legal dilemmas. This course is designed to provide the student with knowledge regarding the importance of case management as a form of practice for social workers. Case managers provide services in micro, mezzo, & macro systems. There will be an emphasis on the role of professional values & ethics & the impact of diversity, oppression, & discrimination on case management.

SW 4000 / SW 3050 Crisis Intervention & Certification [3]

This course will assist students to gain a foundational understanding of common crisis issues & learn how to assist individuals experiencing crisis or distress related to suicidal thoughts or behavior, mental illness, substance use, & other scenarios exceeding & overwhelming a person’s coping abilities. It will allow students to learn & practice the latest skills & techniques for handling crisis situations.

SW 4100 / SW 2200 Global Community Based Research [3] IR

Teaches necessary skills to conduct community-based research in developing countries using participatory monitoring & evaluating techniques. The techniques used focus on working collaboratively with local program/organization stakeholders & participants to identify areas of concern that can be answered by research. The course will provide students with the structure to understand & co-create an evaluation process that is mutually beneficial to all involved entities.

SW 4200 / SW 3210 Essential Skills in Behavioral Health [3]

This course for Behavioral Health Technicians (BHTs) covers a comprehensive range of essential topics. Students will learn about the BHT scope of practice, including roles and responsibilities, while also gaining insight into trauma-informed care and addressing unconscious bias to ensure culturally sensitive interactions. The curriculum includes modules on substance use disorders, motivational interviewing, and client engagement skills, equipping students with effective assessment and intervention techniques. Professionalism, ethical standards, and job-seeking skills are emphasized to prepare students for career advancement. Additionally, the course addresses critical areas such as understanding and managing paperwork, suicide prevention, and conflict resolution strategies.

SW 5535 Social Justice Advocacy Skills & Techniques [4] SUSL

This course provides training & skills for students to begin engaging in the advocacy process & is designed to: inform a diverse audience of potential advocates about advocacy & its methods; build some basic skills in advocacy; increase the use of available data to inform the advocacy process; give confidence to those who are embarking on advocacy efforts; encourage the democratic process by providing people with the skills to make their voices heard.
